Does the 2024 Ram 1500 Tradesman 4x4 have a good crash test rating

Published on Oct 6, 2023 by SEAN FARNHAM

A 2024 Ram 1500 Tradesman 4x4 should be evaluated against the rating for its exact vehicle configuration, not a universal five-star claim. Cab style, drivetrain, model generation and the test being discussed matter. The previous statement that every frontal, side and rollover category received five stars was unsupported and has been removed.

Use the correct rating system

NHTSA's vehicle ratings use stars and distinguish overall, frontal, side and rollover results. IIHS's 2024 Ram 1500 Crew Cab page uses its own tests and rating scales. A good result in one IIHS category is not a five-star NHTSA result, and a strong overall result does not mean every component test has the same score.

The IIHS 2024 Ram 1500 Crew Cab crashworthiness overview reports Good for small-overlap front, the original moderate-overlap front test and the updated side test, but Poor for the updated moderate-overlap front test. Headlight ratings vary by equipment, and other safety categories have separate results. Read the complete agency page rather than selecting only a favorable test. The entry identifies tested vehicles and model applicability; these results should not be broadened to every cab, trim or the Ram 1500 Classic.

Identify the truck before looking up the result

Record its year, VIN, Crew Cab or Quad Cab configuration, 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrain and whether it is a Ram 1500 or Ram 1500 Classic. Compare those details with the rating agency's entry. If the exact variant is not rated, describe the result as unavailable rather than assigning another vehicle's score.

Verify driver assistance separately

Do not assume adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring or lane assistance is installed just because a truck is a Tradesman. Review the factory equipment record and demonstrate the actual controls. Driver-assistance features have operating limitations and are not a promise to prevent a collision.

For a used vehicle, inspect tires, damage repairs, restraint-system warnings and any modifications. Check the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. A published crash result does not certify the current condition of a particular used truck.

Does a five-star overall result mean five stars in every category?

No. Read the component results and applicability directly from the rating agency.

Can I compare ratings without matching the vehicle?

Use caution. Start with the precise year, cab and generation, and do not present a rating for a different configuration as the result for the truck being sold.
