Ram Pickup Beds, Business Miles and Section 179: Three Records to Keep

Published on Nov 7, 2026 by Seth Wadley Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pauls Valley

A Ram business purchase needs more documentation than a receipt. Three useful starting points are the exact vehicle configuration, the actual business-use record, and the date the truck becomes ready for its work. Together, those facts help your tax professional evaluate the applicable depreciation rules.

Document the cargo arrangement

IRS Publication 946 describes an exception to the heavy-SUV Section 179 cap for certain vehicles with a cargo area at least six feet in interior length that is not readily accessible from the passenger compartment. Ask for the actual bed and cab specifications. A trim name or an exterior measurement does not settle the classification, and an exception to that cap does not remove other limits.

Track the business use

Section 179 generally requires more than 50% business use for mixed-use property. Keep dates, mileage, destinations, and business purposes, and ask your adviser how commuting and personal trips should be treated. If qualified business use later falls to 50% or less, recapture rules may become relevant.

Keep the finished-truck documents

Save invoices for any work equipment and records showing when the truck was ready for its intended task. Seth Wadley CDJR of Pauls Valley can provide available configuration and purchase information. Your tax professional can then review the vehicle, use, timing, and elections before you rely on an expected deduction.

Does a Ram's trim name prove its Section 179 classification?

No. Your adviser needs the exact cargo arrangement, interior dimensions, manufacturer rating and business-use facts. An exception to a particular vehicle cap does not remove other deduction requirements. Keep configuration documents, purchase and equipment invoices, mileage records and the operational service date together so the analysis describes the truck you bought and how it is actually used.
