The right financing paperwork depends on the lender and your income situation; there is no single document package that guarantees an auto-loan approval. Prepare accurate records, ask which ones are actually required and use a verified secure submission channel.
This guide is for self-employed and first-time buyers considering vehicles at Seth Wadley CDJR in Pauls Valley. It is not a statement that every lender used by the dealership accepts the same documents or imposes the same conditions.
Start with identity, address and vehicle details
Be ready to provide the identification and residence information requested by the lender, along with the VIN or stock number of your proposed vehicle. Confirm how the legal names on the application and purchase paperwork should appear. If you recently moved or changed your name, explain the difference rather than altering documents to make them match.
Arrange the insurance information required before delivery and ask for the correct lender or lessor details to give your insurer. Requirements differ by agreement. Do not assume an existing insurance card automatically proves the new vehicle and required coverages are in place.
For self-employment, organize evidence rather than inventing a pay stub
Chase's self-employed auto-financing guide discusses tax returns, relevant business schedules and bank statements as possible income documentation. Your actual lender determines what it accepts and how many periods it needs.
Keep personal income, business revenue and transfers between your own accounts distinct. A large deposit is not automatically recurring income. Provide complete records through the approved process and ask how seasonal or variable income should be reported. Do not estimate gross business sales as personal take-home income without clarification.
A useful preparation folder can contain your filed returns and applicable schedules, recent complete statements, current business information and an explanation of unusual deposits. This is a list of records to have available, not an instruction to send all of them to the dealership unrequested.
For wage income or a first purchase
A lender may request recent pay statements, employment details or other evidence. As one lender-specific example, Capital One's prequalification FAQ explains its own proof-of-income requirements and that finalization occurs at the dealership. That does not establish the requirements or credit-inquiry process of every other lender or every tool on this website.
First-time buyers should also prepare a realistic total transportation budget: payment, insurance, fuel, maintenance and any parking or registration costs. A document request is not a final approval, and an estimate on a payment calculator is not a committed loan offer.
Include trade and payoff information when applicable
Bring the trade VIN, registration or ownership records requested for the transaction, lender information and a current payoff quote. If another person is an owner or borrower, ask what participation and signatures are required. Do not sign for someone else or assume every co-owner can be omitted.
If the payoff exceeds the trade value, ask for that difference to be shown separately. Our negative-equity guide explains how old debt can affect the next purchase.
Protect sensitive information
Use the lender's or dealership's verified secure application and document-upload process, or arrange an in-person review. Do not put Social Security numbers, full bank-account information or tax-return images in a public blog comment or general inquiry message. Confirm the destination before uploading anything.
Keep documents accurate and unaltered. If a required record is unavailable, ask about an acceptable alternative; do not create a substitute that misrepresents employment, income or identity. Keep copies of the final application and agreements you sign.
Do I have to disclose child support or alimony?
The CFPB explains that you need not disclose such income unless you want it considered as a basis for repayment.
Does preparing these documents guarantee approval?
No. The lender evaluates the application, vehicle and proposed terms.
What should I ask first?
Ask the dealership for the lender-dependent checklist and secure submission instructions, then compare a specific used vehicle or new vehicle. Reviewed October 10, 2026.
