2024 Ram 5500: Use Chassis-Cab Ratings
The 2024 Ram 5500 is a commercial chassis cab, and the usable towing limit depends on its exact configuration and completed body. Ram's official 2024 Chassis Cab capability page lists up to 35,150 pounds of diesel towing for a properly equipped 5500. That model-line maximum is not a rating for every truck or finished upfit.
Towing and Payload Are Different Limits
The same official 2024 page lists up to 12,550 pounds of payload with the 6.4L HEMI gasoline engine. The diesel towing maximum and gasoline payload maximum describe different configurations; do not combine them as one truck's capability. Cab, wheelbase, drivetrain, axle ratio, installed body and equipment change the applicable figures. Check the Completed Work Vehicle
Ask for the VIN and configuration-specific manufacturer documentation, the vehicle's GVWR, GAWR and GCWR, the hitch and trailer ratings, and the body/upfit records. Count people, fuel, tools, cargo, installed equipment and the trailer's tongue or pin load as applicable. The completed vehicle must stay within every applicable limit; subtracting loaded vehicle weight from GCWR is only one part of the check.
