Ram 2500 Cummins vs. Ford F-250 Power Stroke: Compare Diesel Ownership, Not Just Output

Published on Oct 10, 2026 by Seth Wadley Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pauls Valley

If a Cummins-powered pickup is on your wish list, compare a Ram 2500 before committing to a Ford F-250 Power Stroke. Both diesel names deserve vehicle-specific research. The decision should include the way you work, the required maintenance and the complete truck, not an assumption that one engine family is always better.

Seth Wadley CDJR of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, recommends comparing documented configurations. This guide references Ram's 2026 lineup and Ford's current 2027 Super Duty page; do not treat different model years as identical equipment.

Identify the engine and transmission combination

Ram lists its available 2026 high-output 6.7L Cummins inline-six with an eight-speed automatic, 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. Ford describes Power Stroke V8 diesel configurations in its Super Duty lineup.

Those are different engine architectures, not a reliability ranking. Obtain the selected vehicle's exact engine version and transmission information. Avoid applying a newer high-output rating to an older truck simply because it carries the same diesel-family name.

Match the engine to the working pattern

Write down your normal trip lengths, idle periods, highway use and loaded work. Ask the service team to explain the maintenance schedule and operating requirements for that pattern. A truck used for repeated short errands should not be evaluated only as though it spends every day on long highway runs.

Do not modify or disable emissions equipment to fit an ownership plan. Ask questions about the correct factory operation and have warning messages or irregular behavior evaluated by qualified service personnel before purchase.

Use the same trailer and cargo assumptions

Bring a realistic crew and equipment list plus the trailer's loaded information. Check the truck's applicable ratings and the towing system together. Engine output is not an individual towing approval, and a diesel badge does not establish remaining payload.

For a used truck with accessories or a body conversion, document what was added. The useful comparison is the finished working vehicle, not an unmodified model represented by a brochure maximum.

Ask better questions about a used diesel

Request available service records, inspection information and details about modifications. Have abnormal noises, warning lights or leaks evaluated rather than diagnosing them from a listing or a brief conversation. A seller's general confidence is not the same as a written condition assessment.

Separate engine hours from mileage when that information is available, but do not invent a universal conversion between them. Record what is known and what remains uncertain. The condition of the individual truck matters more than an unsupported brand stereotype.

Compare the cab you will spend time in

Try the seat, controls, mirrors and storage while parked, then use a normal test route. Have the actual crew consider entry and seating. Identify the configuration you prefer rather than claiming that every Ram or Ford has the same comfort characteristics.

Compare written offers and confirm which preparation or accessories are included. Oklahoma and South Texas shoppers should verify location and availability before traveling to Pauls Valley.

Cummins and Power Stroke questions

Does a Cummins badge guarantee a problem-free truck?

No. Evaluate the vehicle, maintenance history and inspection evidence.

Are all model years rated the same?

No. Use the exact engine version, year and configuration.

What is the reason to compare the Ram?

It offers the Cummins-equipped alternative and a complete truck configuration you can evaluate against your work.
