Ram 3500 vs. Ford F-350: Choose the Rear-Wheel Configuration for Your Actual Trailer

Published on Oct 10, 2026 by Seth Wadley Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pauls Valley

A Ford F-350 should not become the default choice before you compare a Ram 3500 configured for the same trailer. First identify whether you are shopping a single-rear-wheel truck or a dually. Then compare cab, bed, engine, installed equipment and the limits of the exact vehicles.

Seth Wadley CDJR of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, suggests beginning with the completed workload. A visually impressive truck can still be the wrong configuration for your trailer or the places you need to park.

Start with configuration, not the highest advertised number

Use Ram 3500 information, Ford Super Duty information and the actual vehicle records to identify candidates. Current manufacturer pages may cover different model years, so check the year of each specification.

Do not compare an engine or towing maximum from a specialized dually configuration with an unrelated single-rear-wheel truck. Both the reason for choosing the configuration and the limits that apply to it must remain visible.

Write a trailer-and-truck load sheet

Include the trailer's loaded information, the load it places on the truck, occupants and equipment carried in the cab or bed. Account for installed accessories without double-counting equipment already reflected in the applicable vehicle information.

The Ram towing resources provide a starting point for reviewing the matching process. Use the actual truck's documentation and all relevant equipment limits before deciding that a combination is suitable.

Compare everyday dimensions too

Measure your garage opening, regular parking spaces and other tight access points. Consider the complete vehicle, including mirrors and any added equipment. A preferred trailer configuration still has to work during errands or the daily drive.

Use a normal test drive to evaluate parking visibility and comfort. Do not conduct an improvised heavy-trailer test to prove capability. The documentation and appropriate professional checks are the basis for the load decision.

Make the Ram-versus-Ford comparison specific

Inspect the Ram's seating, bed access, storage and installed towing features. Have the dealership demonstrate the systems while parked. Then ask the same questions about the F-350 configuration you are considering.

Record findings such as a preferred cab layout or a useful equipment package. A clear individual preference is more valuable than a claim that a badge wins every task. Do not infer that a feature is absent from Ford simply because it is not mentioned here.

For used trucks, examine the actual setup

Request available maintenance and inspection information, along with details of hitch installation or other modifications. Tires, body condition and missing equipment can change the purchase comparison. A previous owner's trailer use is a question to investigate, not a diagnosis of damage.

Compare written prices and what is included for each vehicle. Confirm any needed equipment installation separately. Out-of-town buyers should verify the current location and readiness of the exact truck before traveling.

Ram 3500 and F-350 questions

Is a dually automatically required for every trailer?

No. The loaded combination and actual ratings determine which configurations deserve consideration.

Can two 3500 or F-350 trucks have different limits?

Yes. Cab, bed, engine, equipment and other configuration details matter.

What should I bring to the comparison?

The trailer information, daily load sheet and stock numbers for the candidate vehicles.
