Grand Wagoneer for Business: Review the 2026 Heavy-SUV Tax Rules

Published on Nov 7, 2026 by Seth Wadley Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pauls Valley

A large SUV may serve a business that carries clients, crews, or equipment, but size alone does not establish a full deduction. Our November 7, 2026 inventory review includes Grand Wagoneer Limited stock J154156. If you are considering it for business, have your tax professional review the specific vehicle and intended use.

Check the classification

IRS Publication 946 lists a $32,000 Section 179 expense cap for qualifying heavy SUVs placed in service in tax years beginning in 2026. The rule concerns certain passenger-oriented vehicles rated above 6,000 pounds and no more than 14,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Confirm the actual manufacturer rating and applicable classification; curb weight is a different figure.

Discuss other depreciation separately

The Section 179 SUV cap does not by itself determine the treatment of every remaining dollar of basis. Other depreciation provisions may be relevant, with their own rules. Ask your adviser to evaluate business use, acquisition timing, service timing, and elections before including a deduction in your projection.

Evaluate the practical role

Compare seating access, cargo space with passengers aboard, parking, insurance, and operating costs. Keep a record of the business purpose and actual use. Seth Wadley CDJR of Pauls Valley can supply the vehicle information and purchase documents your adviser needs. Confirm the current vehicle's availability and decide from a complete business and ownership plan.

Is Grand Wagoneer curb weight enough to determine its tax treatment?

No. Curb weight differs from the manufacturer weight rating relevant to the heavy-SUV rules. Give your adviser the exact vehicle's certification and purchase information, business-use facts and timing. Section 179's SUV cap does not by itself explain every other depreciation provision, so have the completed transaction evaluated before relying on a projected deduction.
